How to Clean Your Cleaning Supplies

submitted on 25 June 2023 by thecleaningdirectory.com

A Germ's Worst Nightmare

There exists a strange and counterintuitive conundrum in the realm of cleanliness: that which we trust to sanitise our surroundings, may very well be festering with filth. Yes, dear friend, I am speaking of the cleaning supplies that we so devoutly rely upon. Now, you might find yourself thinking, "Why, cleaning supplies are the agents of cleanliness! Surely they must remain spotless!" Alas, the cruel irony is that in their pursuit of cleanliness, our beloved tools of sanitation often become dirtied themselves. Fear not, however, for I have come bearing wisdom on how to clean the very instruments that provide us with order in a chaotic world.

A Holistic Approach

Before delving into the specifics of cleaning individual tools, I must impart a grand philosophy upon you: treating your cleaning supplies with care and respect is paramount. Do not ignore them when they've served their purpose, nor shove them into a dark closet. Acknowledge their services with gratitude and reward them with the proper cleaning they deserve. And so, without further ado, let us embark on the noble journey of ensuring our cleaning supplies remain pristine and pure.

1. Sponges: The Sultans of Scrub

Ah, the humble sponge - capable of absorbing and removing the vilest of stains. Yet, it is also a breeding ground for bacteria if left unattended. First, a word of advice: replace your sponge frequently, as even the most rigorous cleaning cannot entirely eliminate the microscopic horrors that reside within. Now, onto the cleaning:
  • Microwave Method: Simply place your thoroughly soaked sponge in the microwave and heat it on high for one minute. The high temperature will annihilate most bacteria. Just be sure to let it cool before removing it, lest you scald your fingers.
  • Dishwasher Method: Place your sponge in the dishwasher's top rack during a full cycle, accompanied by the heavenly concoction of detergent and heat. Then revel in your sponge's rebirth, free from malodour and contamination.

2. Mops: The Trusty Tendrils of Tidiness

Mops are valiant soldiers in the battle against grime, and we must honour them accordingly. Begin by removing the mop head from its handle - a separation that may be difficult, but essential in this process.Next, hand-wash the mop head with a gentle detergent in warm water, using a brush to lovingly dislodge any stubborn dirt. Rinse thoroughly and wring out excess water, then allow it to air dry, preferably outdoors, where it can bask in the embrace of Mother Nature. Only when it is completely dry should you reunite the mop head with its handle, lest you create a dank environment that welcomes mildew.

3. Vacuum Cleaners: The Devourers of Dust

As majestic as they are powerful, vacuum cleaners require a delicate touch when it comes to their maintenance. Firstly, always consult your vacuum cleaner's manual before attempting any cleaning, for it is the sacred tome that holds the secrets of your machine's inner workings.Empty the dustbin or replace the bag frequently, as a full container can hinder the vacuum's performance. Also, do not neglect the filters - these can usually be washed with soapy water and left to air dry before reinserting. Finally, it is essential to give your vacuum's brush-roll a thorough examination, as it is prone to entanglement with hair, string, and other nefarious debris. Gently remove these obstructions and allow your vacuum to continue its crusade against filth, unencumbered.

4. Brushes and Brooms: The Bristled Battlers

The unsung heroes of cleaning, brushes and brooms deserve our utmost attention. To clean them, first remove any loose debris from the bristles - a simple task, but one that provides a great sense of satisfaction. Then, fill a bucket with warm, soapy water and submerge the brush or broom head. Gently agitate the water, allowing the bristles to luxuriate in their sudsy bath.Once clean, rinse them with clean water, shake off any excess moisture, and leave them to dry in an upside-down position, bristles facing upwards towards the heavens. This not only ensures proper drying but also prevents the warping of the bristles. A well-cared-for brush or broom will remain a loyal ally in your quest for cleanliness.

5. Cleaning Cloths: The Silken Swipes

And finally, we arrive at the humble cleaning cloth, whose soft embrace has wiped away many a stain. Simply machine-wash these devoted companions with like-coloured laundry on a warm cycle, using a gentle detergent to protect their delicate fibres. Avoid fabric softeners, as they can diminish the cloth's ability to absorb and clean. Air dry or tumble dry on low, and fold them neatly, ready to serve you once more. And so, armed with this knowledge, may you embark on a journey to maintain the cleanliness of your cleaning supplies, providing them with the honour and devotion they so rightly deserve. Go forth, and let your cleaning supplies shine like the beacons of cleanliness they were always meant to be.
